For the Love of Bob Ross

on March 31, 2019

Got a Bob Ross fan in your life? Figure out what to get them AND yourself with this Bob Ross Gift Guide! And remember, no mistakes, just happy accidents.

You guys want to know what gets me through finals? Bob Ross.

Okay, so hear me out. Gone are the days where I can turn up my favorite jams or a movie that I’ve seen a million times and still study. I think for some reason my brain is now more distracted and/or concerned with what I’m actually retaining than reading to just get it done. I usually work while listening to film scores, but come finals season, you can only hear Jurassic Park so many times.

MAKE IT: DIY Flamingo Stencil Tote Bag

So, Bob Ross. Its pretty much ASMR before that was a thing. AND its super encouraging!
“There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.”
“Let’s paint a happy little tree right here. “

Ya’ll I could go on. Will I ever attempt a Bob Ross tutorial? I don’t know. BUT I will give you a list of all the Bob Ross stuff I am currently crushing on… because that is the neighborly thing to do right?

You guys… I am so ready for this movie! Admittedly I only have the vaguest notion of what is going to happen, only that it’s a female super hero, there’s a cute cat and she’s alien? But possibly not? I have also never read the comics despite the urging from one of my old room mates. I know! I’m a bad geek… but whatever. It takes all kinds.

Here is a trailer to watch if you’re so inclined:

The plan for this is to go in clean. I can’t tell you how many movies have been ruined for me because I watched too many trailers or read too many internet comments or just did too much research in general. Nope. I’m going in clean.

That being said, I’m super excited that Disney/Marvel is FINALLY giving a female her own movie. We’ve got Black Widow and Scarlet Witch and Wasp to an extend, but they’ve always been side characters. Fingers crossed they don’t screw it up. Please and thank you.

These bookmarks are inspired by both the comics and the film. Because we at least need to pay homage to the origins of it. Yes, one has a “swear” on it, but it is also one of my favorite quotes, so adults only? For mine, I punched a hole in the top, laminated them, then added some classy tassels using this tutorial. I’m currently using one of them to hold my place in my Physiology Lab Manual. Because I really need some inspiration when trying to find Active Force of muscles. Just sayin.

Human Anatomy Essential Supplies

on September 23, 2018

As we enter into the really hard classes portion of my college 2.0 career, I figured I’d share with you guys what I’m using this year. I’m what is considered a “non-traditional student”. What that means is that I’m not a spring chicken and I’m not taking a full course load. I work while I’m not in class and I somehow manage to get my homework and studying in (I’m still not exactly sure how I managed that last semester). It also means that I’m working towards a second degree that is not related to my first (music industry). This semester I’m taking Human Anatomy- which is my first nursing pre-rec that actually matters so I’m trying to prep as much as possible. In this list, you’ll find some staples – like my backpack and the specific pens I’ll be using – to some Human Anatomy specific stuff that are essential for anyone taking the class.

I’m thinking of writing a post about why I decided to go back to school and all that jazz but there is a part of me that is not quite ready to do that. If that’s something you have experience with or are interested in yourself, drop me a line in the comments!

Human Anatomy Essentials

Human Anatomy essential supplies

I’m going to start off with the actual anatomy stuff because thats probably the most important. Human Anatomy is hard. Even if you have the most amazing teacher, its hard. It’s a lot of memorization and learning random parts of the body that you’re going to need to remember and point out. There’s going to be a lot of drawing and a lot of late night studying – thats just what it is. Here are some things that I’m using this year to help myself through that.

Crash Course Anatomy Poster ($12) – Hank Green (of the Vlog Brothers) created an amazing youtube channel called Crash Course and it’s probably a huge reason why I did well in GOB Chemistry. They have a shop associated with the channel and of course I had to order this awesome poster. Of course –  it doesn’t hurt that it is super cute!

Anatomy and Physiology FlashCards ($17) – I learned in Chemistry that I am not the best at drawing intricate things. It take a lot of practice and honestly, if my grade is dependent on it, I’m bringing in the professionals. These flashcards are also great for if you’re taking physiology or a combined A&P.

Anatomy Coloring Book ($17) – If you’re a person that learns by doing and are very tactile, this coloring book is a great resource. Some advice before starting – Have a plan when you color things in – like keep similar tissues in similar colors or shades. This helps you get a better understanding of how things work together. You’re probably going to want a good set of colored pencils or gel pens – but those aren’t on the list.

Anatomy & Physiology Super Review ($10) I cannot tell you how much time this book has saved me. The chapters in Anatomy books are long and honestly, I just need things condensed into “Need to Know” sections. This book has been a life saver! Also, at $10 for the book, it’s a great deal and ridiculously helpful.

Skull Model ($45) Yep. The first major thing you’ll be learning is the bones. Specifically the skull. If you are the kind of person who likes to have your anatomical model to yourself and available all the time, this ones for you. Also, it makes a really cool Halloween decoration or talking piece. Check here for more models if the mood strikes.

Frixion Pens ($10)You guys!!! These are hands down, my favorite pens. Why? They’re gel pens so they write great AND they’re erasable!!!! How awesome is that! I got the big pack of lots of colors for labeling and because I like to take my notes in different colors each day.

Noise Canceling Headphones ($50+) – I am an earbuds kinda girl. I like that they’re easy to cart around and its no big deal if I lose them. BUT the mom I work for introduced me to the wonders of these suckers while studying and my life has been forever changed.

A cute pencil bag ($12) – You can totally go to Target and get a cute Yoobi one from there or really any kind. I personally just fell in love with this Rifle Paper pencil bag and HAD to have it. And of course it matches my laptop case.

All the notebooks ($0.50 +) – I’m probably a total weirdo but I only like writing in 1 subject notebooks. They’re easy on the wrist and ridiculously cheap. College rule all the way.

Post-it Notes, Page tabs and a Cute Holder Post-its are my jam! They’re great for marking pages in books (I rent mine from amazon) and keeping the notes without damaging the book. And the cute holder – I like cute things okay!?!

S’well Water Bottle ($30) – Yes. I know that is a lot to pay for a water bottle, but I drop mine on the regular and this is legit the only one that hasn’t broken on me and still manages to help save the environment. It is also really important to not get dehydrated while doing all the studying. Also, it comes in a TON of colors.

Meal Prep Bento Boxes ($30 for a set of 3) – Since I have breaks in between classes this year and am also trying to save some moolah, I’ve been trying to pack my lunch a lot. It’s also great to have the healthier option on hand instead of getting hungry then just grabbing food trucks. These glass bento boxes have partitions, are easy to clean AND they’re super sturdy. I seriously don’t worry about them staining and they’re super easy to customize if you want some more color in your life!

I’m sure there are a ton more things, but these are my essentials for the semester. Aside from my trusty Back Pack, I’m pretty sure I’m ready. If you’re back to school for the second or third rodeo, hit me up! How are you coping?

How to Metal Stamp Harry Potter Spell Pencils

on August 23, 2018

Turn your plain wood pencils into a magic wand with these metal stamp Harry Potter Spell Pencils!

I’ve always felt like I wasn’t a big enough fan to have all the cool things associated with fandom – the random Star Wars stuff from Disney or a Hufflepuff phone case. Alternately, I thought that having that fan stuff  (even if I absolutley loved it) would get me labeled as a weird. I’m working through a lot of things right now and realizing that its okay to like what you like, even if someone thinks you’re weird. I can totally be a “non-traditional” student with a Harry Potter backpack in an R2-D2 dress and it doesn’t matter if people judge me… because I like these things.

I’ve also been super into metal stamping lately and wanted to try my hand at doing pencils too. So – Harry Potter + School Supplies + Metal Stamps? Sounds like either a recipe for disaster or something cute. You be the judge.

Harry Potter Spell Pencils

Cost: $50+ – BUT the metal stamps are a total investment and can be used for a TON of other things.

Let’s talk about the Care Bears shall we? So… I, along with many of you grew up on them and are probably now introducing the brand to all of your littles. But not the new CGI ones. Those were an abomination and should never be talked about again. I’m talking about the OG, hand drawn Care Bears. My favorite one was Care Bears in Wonderland. I have no idea why, but those were some seriously good times. Scared to admit you’re a Care Bears fan? Feel like others will tell you they’re “too kiddie”? Just own it! Do you really care what someone else is gonna say?

MAKE IT: STAMPED WATERMELON SHOES

Okay now that we’re feeling all nostalgic, let me introduce you guys to today’s DIY. Yep, you too can have your favorite bear with you wherever you go! For these painted Care Bears shoes I used Grumpy Bear (because even though he was Grumpy, he was still pretty awesome) and Cheer Bear… because… Cheer Bear? And rainbows!

This project was pretty cheap to do, I found the blue shoes at Walmart on sale for $3! $3 you guys! I nearly filled my cart! But I decided against it because I am a responsible adult (sometimes).

DIY Painted Care Bears Shoes

Cost: $15
Time: 1 hour
Nostalgia level: 10!

Supplies:
Canvas shoes – really any shoe with a solid toe area
Multi-surface paints in desired colors
Small paint brushes
Iron for heat setting

To begin, gently clean the front of each shoe with water in the area you will be painting. Allow to dry.

Use a white colored pencil or galaxy marker to outline the shape for each Care Bear “tummy”. It’s essentially a circle with a tuft at the top.

MAKE IT: ZELDA PIXEL HEART NECKLACE

Mix white paint with a bit of fabric medium and fill in each circle with a thin layer of paint. Allow to dry and add one more layer to create an opaque circle.

Once the white layer is dry – give it about 15-20 minutes – go in to paint the design.

For Grumpy Bear:
Paint the cloud first, then the rain drops. Once those are dry, go in with a tiny brush in red to draw “v”s. They come out looking like hearts so there’s less chance of them being too big. You’ll need to draw 3 on each “tummy”

For Cheer Bear:
Start by painting a thin slightly arced stripe of blue about 1/4 inch from the bottom. Allow 5 minutes to dry. Then paint stripes of green, yellow and red (from bottom to top) in the same method.

Paint a tiny heart on the outside heel of each shoe (because all Care Bears have those cute heart butt tag things) in red.

Allow to fully cure for 24 hours then use an iron and a piece of scrap fabric to heat set each design.

This is going to be a short and sweet one guys because in T-minus 2 hours, my Mom is coming into town for the first time ever! That’s right. I’ve lived here for 3 years and my mom is finally able to come visit me!

Do I have anything planned? Not really. Honestly, if it were up to me, we’d just have craft days and bake all day and watch “shoot ’em ups”. I think that’s what I miss the most about having my mom close. What are your favorite things to do with your mom?

Washi Tape Pencils

on August 2, 2016

Head back to school in style with these DIY Washi Tape Pencils for a unique look that doesn’t break the bank!

Is anyone else in love with new school supplies? Whether it’s shopping for them, getting them, packing them, or just wandering down the aisles looking at the promise of a fresh start? Only me? Cool.
10 Minutes or less DIY Washi Tape Pencils! Customize your school supplies this year Washi Tape for a unique look that doesn't break the bank!
I think the only reason I looked forward to a new school year was because I could go get new notebooks and pens and if I was really lucky, a new lunchbox (who am I kidding, I brown bagged it!). ANYWAY! I still slightly obsess over the deas I get this time of year. 17¢ notebooks? Sign me up! 50¢ crayola crayons? Yep I’m stocked. Pretty much any random office supply you can think of is probably on sale is some pretty awesome neon or gold color. And let’s be honest here… this is my life when it comes to stationery.

But sometimes I find the standard yellow pencils to be a bit ho-hum. So it’s time to break out the Washi Tape! I found this fabric tape at the Japanese store Daiso for ridiculously cheap (everything is $1.50!) and I love the grip it gives me on my pencils! And just to note, the tape (whether fabric or regular) doesn’t interfere with regular sharpening.
