When most kids were having their “go outside and run around the neighborhood” phase, I was in my “stay inside and read a book” phase. Yes folks, I was not the most active of children. Does that surprise you? It shouldn’t. But before you start worrying about my health just know that I was at dance class a lot. Like 3-4 nights a week a lot. I just wasn’t a big fan of being outside or sweating or things that go with that.
Okay, so that stay inside and read a book phase…. I liked to read a lot. I remember staying up all night to finish books and somehow making it up in time to go to school or church the next day. I still do that in fact. I fell in love with the character of Matilda Wormwood who shared a love of reading and learning. Matilda was magical, mysterious and overall amazing. So of course while I was creating a hoodie based on another Roald Dahl work, I felt like I needed to honor Matilda in the same way.
Time: 1hr
Cost: $15 or less
Literary level: Genius
Matilda Wormwood Inspired Hoodie
Navy or Royal Blue Sweatshirt or Hoodie
6 Russet Potatoes
Sharp paring knife or craft knife
White acrylic paint
Paint brush
To create the stamps: Cut each potato in half and cut the letters M-A-T-I-L-D out using the craft knife. To do this, slice the shape of each block letter. Then take the knife and cut around the outside of each letter leaving only the imprint behind on the botom of each potato half.
Keep in mind that you should be inverting the letters. Really the only one you should have to invert is the L. The D, though facing one direction can be flipped to the correct side.
Dry the bottoms of each potato off by dabbing them with a paper towel. This will help the paint to adhere and you won’t have to worry so much about potato starch in everything.
Here comes the fun part. Paint the bottom of each stamp with white acrylic paint and randomly stamp them across the entire surface of the jacket including the hood.
Allow to dry over night and rock your book worm magic!

I’ve heard of making stamps out of potatoes, but I have never tried it. Thanks for sharing your fun idea with SYC.
