We’ve been very into coloring pictures and pipe cleaner jewelry over here… like I leave with at least 6 pipe cleaner bracelets every time I come over. Its pretty amazing actually.
The kiddos had the idea that they wanted to make special ones and give them to mom. I asked what was so special and of course Noah pipes up and says “LOVE”. Needless to say my heart was melted. We wanted to make something cute that Mom could keep her knick knacks in so a DIY Jewelry Box it was! The cool thing about this is that it was made entirely of things found at the Dollar Tree besides spray paint! ( I had on hand) Holler for a dollar!
The kiddos had such a fun time putting stickers and jewels all over this project that it almost gave me glitter lung…. and god help my tiny broom from all the sweeping. But they had fun, so who cares.
DIY Jewelry Box
What you’ll need
- small cardboard Gift/jewelry box – I got mine 3 for a dollar
- spray paint – any color. We chose blue because thats what was at my house
- glitter, jewels, foam shapes, anything you can find
- Washable glue (we used Mod Podge)
This project is pretty straight forward. I went head and painted the boxes before giving them to the kids specifically because kids and spray paint is a nightmare. You want to have a nice even coat without anything showing through.
You could have the kiddos paint the project too with acrylic paint, then teach them about patience, but sometimes 2 year olds can’t wait so be prepared for fingerprints and smudgs and extra mess.
The easiest way to set this up, I found, was to use cupcake papers to hold the craft supplies. This way nothing gets super mixed up and its a little easier to clean after.
Brush a thin layer of glue onto the top of each box and let the kids go to town. If they’re older, you can give them some a small pool of glue and a paintbrush for more independence.
