Perler Bead Sushi Magnets

on April 10, 2018

Add some fun Perler Bead Sushi Magnets to your fridge or command center with these patterns and simple tutorial. What are you waiting for?

Okay, so I promised myself I’d be meal planning and eating healthier this year for… reasons and this week, I honestly feel like a failure because I’ve had takeout nearly every day for the last two weeks. I know that failure is really a reason to do better and what not, I just feel like I dropped like.. a million balls. Anyone else feel that way? So, my schedule leaves a lot to be desired in terms of planning, and I could use the age old excuse of not having enough time, but lets be honest here, I have as many hours in the day as Dolly Parton and look at everything she gets done!

Add some fun Perler Bead Sushi Magnets to your fridge or command center with these patterns and simple tutorial. What are you waiting for?

What I’m realizing is that I have to MAKE the time. Not just fit it in wherever. The same goes for crafting. It’s my happy place. Its where I get to paint and listen to books and make fun things that bring joy to my heart. I haven’t been making the time lately and my mental health has not been the best because of it.

These perler bead sushi magnets are the product of an unexpected day off and a plan to just MAKE. I’m pretty stoked on them, if only because they are super cute and I got to use my chop sticks as a photo prop. Its the little things.

How to make Giant Yarn out of Fleece!

on April 5, 2018

Learn how to make your own giant yarn for extreme knitting and chunky blankets! Super easy and so much cheaper that purchasing wool roving!

For the last 2 years I’ve been obsessed with the giant knit blankets you see all over instagram. ALL OVER! You’ve seen them. They look like this.

And yes, I spent many hours looking at how to make one myself and I came to a few conclusions.

1. My arms are too wide to do arm knitting that looks half way decent.
2. Wool roving is expensive no matter how you find to buy it.
3. Buying one of these things is still ridiculously expensive.
4. Roving is not a great thing to make a knit blanket out of. It sheds and is delicate and you can’t wash it. And I have a cat that likes to make biscuits. Thats all that needs said there.

And while I’m sure there are a ton of other yarns out there to achieve the look, I decided to make my own.

Learn how to make your own giant yarn for extreme knitting and chunky blankets! Super easy and so much cheaper that purchasing wool roving!

In this tutorial you’ll learn to make your own giant yarn using strips of fleece for any number of projects!

How to make Giant Yarn out of Fleece!

Time: 2-3 hours
Cost: $40 – I got the fleece on sale!
Suggested viewing: A Series of Unforntunate Events (The Series)

Supplies:
7-8 Yards of a solid color fleece
Fabric scissors or Rotary cutter
Self healing mat
Ruler
Your hands!

To begin, lay out your fabric (or as much as you can). Keep it folded like it came off the bolt. We’re going to work in 3 feet sections. Place your ruler to the folded side and start cutting 3 inch strips, leaving about 2 inches uncut on the edges of the unfolded side. – NOTE: Depending on what you’re going to use this for, you may want to use 2 inch strips instead of 3. I used 3 inches for a blanket, but 2 inches for anything having to do with giant needles (Size 50 or 70)

Just a quick side note…. maybe don’t do this if you have cats in your immediate vicinity. Or maybe Grampa the Cat is just a butthead. She basically decided all of fleece was hers to play with and hide under… but only while I was trying to cut it. Here is a cute photo for proof.

The easiest way I found to do this was to cut mark my measured out 3 inches, then go back and cut the rest of the strip. Just remember to leave those last 2 inches. This is VERY important.

Once you’ve cut your section strips, its time to make the yarn.

This is where it gets weird so I’m gonna walk you through it.
On the TOP layer, first strip – cut all the way to the edge. Pull the strip to the side.

Learn how to make your own giant yarn for extreme knitting and chunky blankets! Super easy and so much cheaper that purchasing wool roving!

Now, on the BOTTOM layer – First strip – DO NOT cut on the first cut, but the second, so you’ll have a bit of a U shape. Trim and round the outside edges of this “Turn” and set aside.

Learn how to make your own giant yarn for extreme knitting and chunky blankets! Super easy and so much cheaper that purchasing wool roving!

Do the same technique for the next line of your TOP layer that you just did for the BOTTOM layer. Trim around the outside edges.

You’ll notice that you’re making one long continuous strip of fabric. Keep going! As your yarn gets longer you can start to roll it into a ball.

Once you’ve finished with one section, keep the strip attached to the next section and lay out another section of fabric. Repeat the method above until you’ve finished all of the fabric. You should have a GIANT ball of yarn. You can also do this in two balls and use your needle and thread to attach the ends of both strips.

The 2018 April Playlist is HERE!

on April 3, 2018

Grab your headphones and listen up because the DoItYourFreakingSelf 2018 April Playlist is here for your listening pleasure!

When I was a kid, I made mix cd’s for EVERYTHING. It was legit like Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist – though, I didn’t make 12 breakup mix cd’s. Maybe like 2 and they were for no one’s ears but my own. I digress. Mix CD’s. I’m a bit old school in that I feel like more work went into a CD. You could only put 80 minutes on there – MAX and it was so important to get the order and flow of the mix just right. I’d spend hours trying to get the perfect ins and outs of the playlist. Making sure that each song flowed well into another or had the same theme. Not to mention that these mixes had to be created using music you already “owned”. I say owned because I was very expressly forbidden from illegally downloading music and iTunes hadn’t come along yet. I’m aging myself here.

2018 April Playlist #Playlist #SpringMusic

Anyway… one of my goals for this year (2018) was to create a monthly playlist and while I know I’ve fallen short, I’m attempting to dive in a bit. I creating this April Playlist for you guys featuring some of the music I’ve been jaming to over the last few weeks. And yes… I did stress out over song order thankyouverymuch. There are some lines that just jump out at me that I had to share, some new tracks, some old tracks… Its just what I wanted to put out there for you guys.

Pastel Coconut SnoBall Cupcakes

on March 29, 2018

Gear up for spring with these Pastel Coconut SnoBall Cupcakes! Great for a spring table, Easter brunch or just because!

I don’t know about you guys, but usually I’m super excited for all things spring. The new styles are coming out, things are in bloom, kids can go outside without me worried they’ll get a million different sicknesses…. but this year…. this year, I have midterms and I realized I’m stress baking. In between crying over chemistry problems and trying to figure out “the impact of language” I’m over here making cupcakes and trying not to gain a million pounds of sugar and stress weight. Basically, I’m trudging through thankyouverymuch.

One of the things I’ve been craving (because I stress bake AND eat okay?!?) has been coconut and marshmallows. It may be that its spring and almost Easter and I really want to make a bunny cake with the kiddos – it’s gonna happen, I swear! Theres gonna be a mess of coconut and jelly beans and sugar blasted kids and I am HERE FOR IT.

In the mean time, I made these Pastel Coconut SnoBall Cupcakes. Luckily I was smart and took them to class with me to be eaten by my Communication Studies class who were all super grateful for the latenight pick me up. YAY! More fridge space for more goodies and more… stress baking? It’ll end soon… I hope.

Okay, so what is a snoball? If you’ve never had one, they’re these hostess snack cakes that are essentially marshmallow filled chocolate cake covered in (sometimes neon pink) coconut shreds and cream and they are so. stinkin. good. You can make them any color you want simply by mixing in a drop or so into 1 cup of coconut shreds! Pretty awesome right?!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Easter Eggs

Create fun Wizarding World of Harry Potter Easter Eggs this spring! Make Hogwarts House eggs or Weasleys Wizard Wheezes inspired Eggs!

I feel like I’ve been in a whirlwind of work and school and podcast launching for the last 2 months and I finally feel like I have some breathing room. One thing that has kept me partially sane is my mini trips to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood…. and wine. Lots of wine.

MAKE IT: Magical and Delicious Boozy Butterbeer Cupcakes (that might get you drunk)

Universal Studios is about half way between one of my jobs and with my season pass, I sometimes like to stop on the way home and wander through the cobble stone streets of Hogsmeade drinking a butterbeer and eating fish and chips. And… possibly work on Chemistry homework. IT NEVER ENDS!!!

So of course, when I finally had time to make some Easter Eggs, I only had one thing on my mind and for real… I’m a bit in love with these Harry Potter Easter Eggs. Aaaaand I’m kinda craving one of Mrs. Weasley’s chocolate eggs (even though she was super mean and gave Hermione a smaller egg in the 4th book).

Okay, so these Harry Potter easter eggs are two fold. I did the traditional Hogwarts House eggs with the house crests and the Hogwarts Crest and then I did some Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes inspired ones. The graphics and iconography for their shop is absolutely amazing and Fred and George were GENIUSES!!!

Leprechaun Peppermint Fudge Recipe

A fun and festive dessert for Saint Patrick’s day? Minimal time in the kitchen? Yes please! Check out this super Easy Leprechaun Peppermint Fudge Recipe!

You guys! I finally had a day off  – no school, no work, no laundry – okay, I had laundry, but I didn’t do it. I made fudge instead. Because well, I bought these really cool Fancy Sprinkles and they were begging to be used and I wanted chocolate. Also, as you know, peppermint is my favorite flavor.

The story:

I tried making fudge over the holiday season. I had exactly one batch come out passable. The rest? Not so much. I was a bit pissed at myself for the kitchen fail. I had PLANS for that fudge. I didn’t make anymore because I didn’t want to go back to the store so I called it a day.

MAKE IT: Edible Glitter Valentines Pops

Fast forward 4-ish months and I decided to give it another go…I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED BY CHOCOLATE! Okay, maybe that was a little bit eggagerated but you get the picture. This Peppermint Fudge recipe only has 4 ingredients and is pretty much fool proof. Well, maybe not totally but I’ll get to that in a minute.

Ingredients:
12 oz chocolate candy melts (1 bag)
12 oz white chocolate candy melts (1 bag)
2 tsp peppermint extract (1 for each color)
2 tsp vanilla
2 cans (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
Green food coloring
Fancy Sprinkles in Pot of Gold (optional but definitely recommended)

Supplies:
Microwave safe bowl
Spatula
Pan
Parchment paper
Kitchen Scale (optional if you are weighing chocolate)

Start by lining a pan with parchment paper. This is going to make removing the fudge a breeze.

** If you are using almond bark or candy quick, use 13 to 14 oz of chocolate instead of 12. I made this mistake with my top layer and it was super gooey. Alternately, you can use less sweetened condensed milk.

A fun and festive dessert for Saint Patrick's day? Minimal time in the kitchen? Yes please! Check out this super Easy Leprechaun Peppermint Fudge Recipe!

Bottom Layer
1. Place chocolate candy melts and 1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk into a microwave safe bowl and heat for 1 minute. Stir.

2. If chocolate is not all melted, heat in 20 second intervals, stiring well in between.

3. Once all of your chocolate is melted, stir in 1 tsp peppermint extract and 1 tsp vanilla extract.

4. Pour and spread it into your prepared pan. Cool in refrigerator for 1 hour or until mostly solid.

Top Layer

1. Repeat the same process for your top layer as you did the bottom layer.
2. Add a few drops of green food coloring until you get the desired color.
3. Pour and spread it on top of your cooled chocolate layer and top with sprinkles. Cool for 1 hour.

Once your fudge is completely cooled, you can pull it out, cut it into small squares and enjoy! I am willing to admit that I ate a lot of this while taking these pictures and I maybe paired it with coffee and baileys – because… reasons.

Grab your size 10’s! We’re making a cowl!

When I was taking my latest sorting test on Pottermore (Hufflepuff btw – FINALLY) I was asked if I prefer cold or hot weather… and of course I chose cold because I love nothing more than to burrow under my blankets with Grampa the Cat and read a good book or just sleep. If I have to venture out? You can bet I am also bundling up.

One of my favorite things to wear and make during the winter season are cowls. They’re like scarves but they just live around your neck so you don’t have to worry about the ends of your scarf being at the wrong angle or whatever. You don’t have to worry about it falling off or getting in the way. Really, I love making scarves but I love it when they’re no fuss. So… yeah, I live by the love of the cowl.

This particular cowl is ridiculously easy to make even for beginners. Really though, the yarn is the star. It’s what gives it that beautiful pink and purple gradient. You can use any yarn you’d like but for this particular pattern you’re going to want a self striping yarn, or a gradient yarn.

3 Things I do on Valentines Day

  1. I buy my room mate a giant bag of candy and a flower – even though she won’t eat the candy and gets mad at me that I got her something.
  2. I still buy valentines cards for my nanny kids
  3. I wait until the day after to buy ALL THE CHOCOLATE

I’m sure theres more but thats the general census of my life on Valentines day – during the whole season really. I used to hate it because I was single and had no one – until I stopped caring. I love the hearts and the pink and purple, and cute things…. so I just grew to accept that Valentines meant something different to me than the typical lovey dovey stuff. And I’m cool with that. I freaking LOVE it!

As it is Valentines (or Galentines) season, what better way to use them than with this DIY Conversation Hearts Sleep Mask. As I was making them, I envisioned myself having a sleep over where we all made these. Alas, as I’m adulting and working and going to class all the time, that is not happening, but a girl can dream right!
