A Colorful Boho Headboard

GUESS WHAT YOU GUYS?!? I made a headboard! Okay, well… not really, but I did make an “above the bed” decoration type thing and it makes me feel super coordinated.

And before you ask, yes. That is a twin size bed. Yes I sleep in it – at nearly 32 years old – every night. No, I don’t share it, well, except with the cat, but she sleeps on top of me usually. Would I like a bigger bed? Yes. But this one suits my needs and my space just fine for now.

The wall space above the bed is a weird thing. Headboards can get kinda pricey and, since I live in earthquake friendly California, I didn’t want to hang up anything heavy that could possibly fall on me and re-enact a scene from final destination or something. Yes, morbid things. MOVING ON! So… after nearly 6 years and many many iterations and color scheme changes and pinterest boards – I finally put something up. And really, I’m a bit in love!

For this headboard all I used were some different sized embroidery hoops and coordinating embroidery floss. And then some nails for hanging.

This technique is pretty simple and also a really cool way to use those embroidery hoops I planned on using for cross stitching – and never used. Go figure.

Simply separate the hoops, wrap, reassemble and hang.

You can’t really see it, but I also have a navy blue feature wall, and some teal/green IKEA bins to hold craft supplies, so thats where those colors came from. I’ve never been one for matchy-matching but I think it holds up without being too in your face.

Materials

Embroidery Hoops in various sizes
Coordinating Embroidery floss - 1 skein for every hoop and a few extra

Instructions

Separate your hoop and start wrapping embroidery floss around the inside hoop.
This is also a fun time to experiment with different angles you may want to use or different wrapping styles.
Once you’re happy with the look, hold it tightly on the edge while placing the outer hoop back on. Tighten the outer hoop and cut off the hanging ends.
Do this for as many hoops as you want to use. Quick note, the largest hoop took an extra skein of floss, so don’t be scared to more to get the effect you want.
Once you’re done wrapping all of your hoops its time to hang them. I wish I had taken photos of this process, but it was kinda the same as hanging a gallery wall.
