When I was a kid Easter was this magical experience. Like Christmas but with pastels. It’s the start of spring and the end of lent and one year we got honest to God bunnies. Like real ones! I remember waking up every year to a trail of hershey kisses or jelly beans or whatever my parents decided to lay out that year and go on this epic hunt with my sister to find our Easter baskets. They never disappointed either! Then we all dressed in super frilly dresses (because that is what one does when they’re seven years old on Easter) and headed off to Church. As an adult without my own kids, I still try to keep that magic around whether it’s with the kids I babysit for or with my friends. In recent years we’ve done Easter basket exchanges, a bit like secret santa, but you know…. with bunnies and chocolate crosses and wine. Yep. This year, I’m showing you how to make your own unique Tassel Basket for Easter goodies to impress your friends and make yourself feel classy AF.

DIY Tassel Basket for Easter

Supplies:
Bamboo Basket – I got mine from Target for about $2.50
Embroidery floss (12 skeins total. Mix and match colors!)
Scissors
Bulldog clip
Hot Glue
Barefoot wine (for drinking after)

Time: 30 minutes or less
Cost: $6
Classy Level: Um… it’s pretty high up there.

Let’s begin by creating our tassels!

You’re going to use an entire skein of embroidery thread for each tassel and they’re oh so easy! Remove the paper labels. Then cut off 2 pieces that are the length of the folded skein. So about 4-ish inches.

From there, place one piece of thread in the center of the skein and fold in half. Tie the thread at the top.

With your other piece of thread, tie a knot around the top of the folded part of your tassel. To accomplish this, I used a bulldog clip on a piece of cardboard to hold the top strings tight. Then I loosely made a simple knot around the top part of the tassel where I wanted things to lay. Tighten that knot once you’re happy with location and tie another knot making a square knot.

Once you have your knot in place cut the loops on the bottom. You can either cut clear across or thread your scissors through the bottom of each side of the skein and gently cut. This will give you an even cut and is ridiculously easy.

Do this 12 times or for however many tassels you need.

Once your tassels are created it’s time to get gluing. Use a measuring tape to measure the circumfrence of your basket. Divide that by number of tassels  and place some washi tape or markers where that even spacing is.

My basket measured 36 inches around and I had 12 tassels so (using my trusty calculator because apparently I forgot how to do division at the time) they were spaced 3 inches apart.

Using the hot glue gun, place a dot of glue on the back of each tasses. You’ll want to do this on the sides of the tassel with loose threads and make sure they’re secured in this. Place the tassel on the basket where you want it to go. Do this until you’re out of tassels.

Guess what guys! You just made a basket that Cost Plus World Market would be proud to sell! Pat yourself on the back, break open the wine and treat yo’ self!

OK. This has to be the easiest tassel making tutorial I’ve ever seen and I LOVE it! I had never thought about just using a whole skein. That makes it so easy! Thanks for sharing.
