A Colorful Boho Headboard

on February 27, 2019

Learn how to DIY your own colorful boho headboard using embroidery hoops and your favorite colors!

GUESS WHAT YOU GUYS?!? I made a headboard! Okay, well… not really, but I did make an “above the bed” decoration type thing and it makes me feel super coordinated.

Learn how to DIY your own colorful boho headboard using embroidery hoops and your favorite colors!

And before you ask, yes. That is a twin size bed. Yes I sleep in it – at nearly 32 years old – every night. No, I don’t share it, well, except with the cat, but she sleeps on top of me usually. Would I like a bigger bed? Yes. But this one suits my needs and my space just fine for now.

A Colorful Boho Headboard

The wall space above the bed is a weird thing. Headboards can get kinda pricey and, since I live in earthquake friendly California, I didn’t want to hang up anything heavy that could possibly fall on me and re-enact a scene from final destination or something. Yes, morbid things. MOVING ON! So… after nearly 6 years and many many iterations and color scheme changes and pinterest boards – I finally put something up. And really, I’m a bit in love!

For this headboard all I used were some different sized embroidery hoops and coordinating embroidery floss. And then some nails for hanging.

DIY Painted Halloween Mini-Giftbags

on October 10, 2017

Create these simple Painted Halloween Mini-Giftbags for all of your holiday treats and goodies! A quick project for everyone to enjoy!

I am ready to admit that I am pumpkin spiced out… yes, I know we are only 2-ish weeks into fall but it’s EVERYWHERE and I just can’t you guys. I can’t. What does pumpkin spice have to do with today’s post? Nothing. I just felt like I needed to share that tidbit of information.

Okay, now on to better things… like crafts! I’m entering into my busy season (yes, I have like 5 of them) with babysitting and nannying which means I’m racking my brain to come up with crafts to keep the kiddos entertained and also not cover mom and dad’s house with random knick-nacks. I think I’ve got a win with these. I tried these halloween mini-giftbags the other day with my 4 year old kiddo and she was all about some polka dots! I think they’re going to put “spooky” school supplies in there for her class… but she may just use them to keep random princess jewelry in so who really knows.

I’m also super stoked to partner with Oriental Trading on this post. We’ve used them a lot while I was working at the Church during things like VBS and Family Camp, but I didn’t realize how much of a selection they actually had! The best part? I can order my party supplies and my craft supplies in one go. Pretty awesome if I do say so myself. Check out their craft supplies here!

And now onto some bags!

MAKE IT: HALLOWEEN TYPOGRAPHY VASE

Supplies:
Mini Drawstring canvas bags
Cotton Swabs
Small paintbrush
Paint in chosen colors
Cardstock – for separating the bags

Begin by cutting a piece of cardstock to size and fit it inside of each bag. This will keep the paint from bleeding through.

Pour some paint onto a pallet or paper plate and use the cotton swabs to make polkadots! Easy peasy! If you’re working with kids, or in a batch, it’s easiest to do one color at a time.

Remove the paper and let the bags dry. You can heatset with an iron, but it’s not crucial.

For the spider web, I used black paint and a small paintbrush. You can probably sketch out the general design but I like to live on the wild side.

Just like in elementary school, paint a few straight lines then connect them with a few droopy lines to make a web. I ran into the problem of having my lines look too…. sketchy? So if that happens, make sure you have a full brush then paint outside in.

Food Safe DIY Jack Skellington Cake Stand

Scare up a good treat by making a simple DIY Jack Skellington Cake stand! Perfect for your Halloween decor or party tablescape! Dollar Store DIY! - Nightmare Before Christmas | Tim Burton | Food Safe | Halloween Projects | Party table - Doityourfreakingself.com

Do you ever have those movies that you’re maybe glad you didn’t see as a kid but are also your favorites? I was not allowed to see Nightmare Before Christmas when it came out. Granted, I was about 5 years old with an overactive imagination so this was probably a good decision on my parent’s part. And while I still have quite the imagination, this film has become one of my absolute favorites… At this time of year especially.

MAKE IT: NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS ZERO PILLOW PAL

Also, Hocus Pocus! I saw that movie when I was 7 and it (for some reason) scared the bejebus out of me! I don’t think my parents ever would have let me see it at that age, but we were at a neighbors house and no one really told our parents what we were watching. I spent the entire walk home thinking Billy Butcherson was chasing me and that I should never light a black candle. Like… ever. Now… I love that movie! It is so delightfully campy and I can’t figure out why I was scared in the first place. However, I probably would have loved it anyway so there’s that.

Okay so yes, I had protective parents. But a part of me is glad they understood me enough to not let me give myself nightmares.

Anyway!!! Welcome the Halloween Season! I’m so glad you’re here! It’s probably my favorite because it is also fall and I can wear sweaters with Star Wars characters on them and not get funny looks. This year, I’m hosting a Tim Burton inspired Halloween party so I KNEW I needed to create something Jack themed. This Food Safe DIY Jack Skellington Cake Stand cost me $10 MAX and I can’t wait to show you how to make it!

Supplies:
9″ Clear glass plate – I got mine from Ikea but you can get the same ones from amazon.
Multi Surface or enamel paint in black and white
Paintbrush and large foam pouncer
Clear spray sealant (optional)
Glass candle stick – I got mine from the dollar store
E6000 Glue
Printout of Jack’s Face – I sized mine to be 7.5 inches just to give myself some room – you can do this by either loading it into a photo editor or playing around with the scale.

Start by cleaning the back of your plate with rubbing alcohol.

Place the Jack Skellington face on your surface with the plate FACE DOWN over it. This will give you a guide to paint the face!

Using a paintbrush and black enamel paint carefully paint the design on the back side of the plate. Allow it to dry then add a second coat. Let it dry for at least 2 hours.

After painting the face, it’s time to fill in the back. I originally used spray paint but it ended up bubbling and probably wouldn’t have held up after washing. SO! Switching tactics, using white enamel or multi surface paint and a large foam pouncer, fill in the back of the plate. Make sure to paint over the black areas too so the plate will look good from all angles. Let it dry for an hour and go back in for a second coat or just fill in patchy places.

To heat set your paints PLEASE follow the instructions on your paint. Each kind is different with different dry times and I don’t want to tell you different.

I let mine dry for 1 hour then set the plate in a COLD oven paint side up. I then heated the oven to 350 then let it cook for 30 minutes once it hit temperature. After that I let it cool IN THE OVEN with the door open.

Once your paint is set, it’s time to add the stand part. I’ve seen people use other things like painted vases or wooden candle sticks so just find what you like. You do you girl! I chose the candle stick because I happened to have a few in craft storage and figured I should probably use it.

Mark the center of the plate – I measured 4.5 inches in from the edges – and use E6000 glue to secure the candle stick to the bottom of the plate. Let it dry overnight and you’re good to go!

Vicious Perler Bead Shark Cupcake Toppers

Kick off your Shark Week or Sharknado festivities with some kid friendly Perler Bead Shark Cupcake Toppers! You know you want to!

In the Vegas lights

Before I get into this DIY I wanna talk a little bit about the band mentioned in the lyric above. Do you ever feel weird being a fan of a band that is super huge AGAIN? Like I went to their shows when they opened to Honda Civic Tour for Fall Out Boy (their first tour). I was there through the split up and consequent unknown afterwards. So it’s really strange to me to attend a concert of Panic! at the Disco when a lot of their fans now are younger than I was when they first formed as a band. I’m totally happy for them but it just makes me feel so… old? At what point did I become the parent in the room?!? Anyone else?

Okay so Sharks. Can we talk about Sharks? Because I’m really excited that it is Shark Week and also the premiere of Sharknado 5! Yep! There are 5 of them. And I am the first to admit that I have watched and LOVE all of them so far. They are the epitome of cheesy sci-fi and and so out there that it’s hilariously amazing. As for Shark Week… I learn a ridiculous amount without having to be scared out of my wits a la Deep Blue Sea or Jaws (Cheesy, yes I know but imagine watching those when you’re like 12. No more oceans thank you very much!)

Okay, so DIY. Yes, that’s why we’re all here. I started these to be earings but they ended up being way to big to put on the side of your head so I had to do some quick thinking and decided that cupcake toppers was the proper solution. I really love this project in particular because I can get some of the older kiddos involved and keep them busy. Perler beads are your BFFs when you work with 6+ year olds!

Make sure there are 3 rows of stick on the bottom. I forgot to add those to the pattern! Oops!!

These are super easy, as usual. Grab a square peg board and follow the patterns above. Iron as directed and allow them to cool completely before removing them from the peg boards. I found that a large square can hold 2 sharks and 2 fins so keep that in mind if you’re working on a large batch.

Stick in your favorite cupcake recipe and get down with your bad self! Depending on how you iron, these can also be washed in the dishwasher – top shelf please!

On hot summer nights I like to open up the windows, pull out my favorite vinyl and drink a cold glass of wine. I invite the gal pals over for some great conversation and noshing and well… we call those nights “Vinyl and Wine” nights. There is just something about the evening and flavors that really bring out the experience. And as you guys know… I am all about the sensory experience and flavor is probably at the top of my list.

Thanks Notable Wines for giving me the perfect excuse to host a great Vinyl and Wine night with my gal pals to talk sound and flavor senses. I teamed up with them today to make these pretty classy (if I do say so myself) lyric etched wine glasses inspired my their two varietals of Chardonnay that highlight the flavor right on the bottle!

For this get together, we had the Oaky and Buttery (California) Chardonnay and the Fruity and Crisp (Australia) Chardonnay. My favorite thing to do was pair each wine with a song or lyric that hightlighted the flavors so for the Oaky and Buttery Chardonnay, I chose a more full bodied, deeper song and for the Fruity and Crisp, I chose a song that is a little bit lighter and acoustic.

Wine Glasses
Stencil tape or adhesive vinyl
Pencil and craft knife
Template
Etching cream

To begin, clean your wine glasses off with rubbing alcohol. That will make sure you have a clean surface to start with.

Cut out your lyrics. If you’re super fancy and have a cricut, you can simply load the template into the design space and set the size – 3×2″.

If you want to do your own lyrics you can choose your font in the program and go to town! Mine turned out a little smudgy… but I think the quotes were a little long.

Adhere the lyric cut outs to your wine glasses. If you’re using larger quotes there will be some bubbles in the vinyl. That’s fine. Just use your nail to squidge it down so that the edges are sealed in.

Pair your favorite songs with your favorite wine with these simple Song Lyric Etched Wine Glasses. Great for girls nights, listening parties, hostess gifts and more! #shop msg 4 21+ #cbias #chardonnation #notablesummer

Put on your latex or rubber glove and begin to paint on the etching cream in globs. Just dab it on there. Once it’s all on there, let it sit for 3-5 minutes. I found that for these glasses, 5 minutes was better.

Once it has set, simply wash the etching cream off in the kitchen sink. Peel the stencil away and rinse some more until everything is off of the glass.

Voila! Pour a glass of either Oaky and Buttery or Fruity and Crisp Notable Wines’ Chardonnay and pair with your favorite music. What songs will your pair it with at your next “Vinyl and Wine” night?

Valentines day is just around the corner… or as I like to call it “Singles Awareness Day” or SAD for short. Because this year especially, it gets sad around these parts. But thankfully… a wonderful woman named Leslie Knope has given me something else to celebrate! Let me introduce you to Galentines Day.

“Oh it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

Basically it’s like Valentines Day, but instead of getting smoochy with your significant other, you’re spending it being awesome with your favorite gal pals. Get with it! The inspiration for today’s 3 Ingredient Strawberry Candy Bark? Well, I love the taste of strawberry and milk chocolate together and well, when I’m sad I’m eating chocolate. So this more of a selfish project, but who doesn’t want to eat chocolate for breakfast when they’re sad or celebrating? Win Win guys! I’m also giving these away as party favors for our Galentines day party this year!

Hands up if you never get out of Target without spending at least $50. The whole “make a list and stick to it” thing? Out the window the minute I hit the home decor section or the dollar section. I ended up with this paper mache BOO sign that you’re supposed to paint… but I ended up taking it a step further.

How to Make a 5 Minute DIY Skull Vase

on September 23, 2016

Make a DIY Skull Vase in under 5 minutes! Just cut a hole in the top of a plastic skull and fill with fake flowers!

Does anyone skip fall decorating and go straight for halloween? I figure it’s probably easier for me to do halloween first instead of fall – halloween – fall again.

Okay, so I maybe went a little overboard with the halloween this year, but whatever. I’m a crafter. If you don’t have a ton of time to create things and are on the broke boat, you can still do amazing things for super cheap. You just need some ingenuity and a trip to the dollar store. This 5 Minute DIY Skull Vase can be made for under $5 (including fake flowers) and are great for your halloween and Day of the Dead decor.
