Sometimes I get bored and make things. Hence the reason I started a blog!

Okay, so recently I tried to KonMari my house, or at least my craft stash, because at this point it was taking over my house. I got rid of some fabric, notions, random odds and ends, projects that I was never going to finish, etc. But I just couldn’t part with my yarn knowing that I could do a few stash busters and make a ton of small projects. Yarn tends to spark joy. There’s just so many possibilities!

Do you have any project supplies that you just can’t part with?

I learned to knit in the 9th grade lunchroom from my friend Scarlett. Since then I’ve forgotten how and re-learned things again like how to knit a beanie with the help of some Youtube videos … I’m convinced that much of being an adult is youtubing how to do stuff.

So, if you don’t know how to knit and want to learn how, check out this video, you’ll be knitting in no time. Other than starting with a scarf, simple beanies are a great way to get started with small knitting projects.

How to Knit a Beanie on Straight Needles (with heart embelishments)

What you need:
1 skein Soft/Off white worsted weight yarn (I had some Red Heart on hand, so thats what I used)
Pink, Purple and Dark Pink yarn – you don’t need a lot of this, so getting a set of bonbons is perfect.

The HAT
I knit this on straight needles, so if you’re not confident with or hate circular needles (guilty!) this pattern is for you!

Key:
K = Knit
P = Purl
K2tog = knit 2 together

Cast On – (66 – Child) 82 – I add the 2 to make it easier to stitch everything together at the end)
Row 1-8:  *K1 P1* Repeat all the way across

Work in Stockinette stitch (K 1 row, P 1 row) until the piece measures (5 inches) 7 inches from cast on edge ending with a purl row.

Crown Row 1: Knit 6, ktog2* repeat to end- end with knit 2
CR 2:Purl row (58 stitches) 72 stitches
CR 3:Knit 5, ktog2* repeat to end – end with knit 2
CR 4:Purl row (50 stitches) 62  stitches
CR 5:Knit 4, ktog2* repeat to end – end with knit 2
CR 6:Purl row (42 stitches) 52  stitches
CR 7:Knit 3, ktog2* repeat to end – end with knit 2
CR 8:Purl row (32 stitches) 42  stitches
CR 9:Knit 2, ktog2* repeat to end – end with knit 2
CR 10:Purl row (24 stitches) 32  stitches
CR 11:Knit 1, ktog2* repeat to end – end with knit 2
CR 12:Purl row (16 stitches) 22  stitches
Cut about a 12 inch tail

Carefully pull the last row of knitting from the needle and thread the needle through every stitch. Pull tightly then mattress stitch the seam shut.  Weave in ends.

Have you got it all done? Only one more thing left to do. Arrange the hearts where you want them and stitch them on. If you’re not into stitching things in, you can use E-6000 glue. It takes a little more finesse and time, but it’ll hold pretty well too.

    I attempted this beanie and absolutely love the pattern with the hearts! Only issue I have is the sizing. It turned out super big?! Wouldn’t even be able to shrink it to fit. (I’m just starting out knitting so I wouldn’t have a clue about sizing I guess I know better now!)

      Hi T! A lot of it depends on the size of the needles you use. If you use a 7 or 8 guage, it should come out sized for a child (cast on 62 stitches). If it is too wide, I’d suggest decreasing your cast on by multiples of eight until you get the size you’d like. You can also increase by that number if you’d like a wider hat.

      Alternately if it’s too tall, (I know this is going to sound really weird) but I measure around my head from where I want the hat to sit on the back of my head and check every so often until it comes up to an inch or so below the crown. Just hold the needle up there. If this is a little to wierd, measure that length and that’s how tall your hat should be before you start working the crown.

      Hope this helps!
