As the weather cools down out come my yarn stash….

When I moved to Los Angeles I packed up my car. If it didn’t fit, it didn’t come with me. What did fit was an entire suitcase full of… yep, you guessed it. YARN. I learnt to crochet as a kid and it’s been one of my favorite ways to make handmade gifts as well as to calm down after a crazy week. I’m pretty much in love with all yarn work and I honestly feel like it is something anyone can do in some way shape or form. This cinched Crochet Ear Warmer uses only 2 stitches  and is a wonderful beginner project just in time for the cooler weather.  Even better…. they’re in Hogwarts house colors so I’m super excited to wear these babies all around Universal Studios this winter and feel like a real Hogwarts alumni!

Round 1: With main color (COLOR A) – Chain 65 (or until it measures the circumfrence of your head). Join with slip stitch

Round 2 COLOR A): ch 2, HDC in each chain stitch being careful not to twist. Join with a slip stitch.

Without cutting off ends, add color 2. To do this, simply begin crocheting with your new color (COLOR B), leaving the end of the main color where you left it. If you want to easily weave in the end of the new yarn, crochet over it as you continue the round. It will be securely inside the work with a minimal footprint.

Round 3 (COLOR B): Repeat Round 2

Round 4 (COLOR A): Without cutting the ends, pick up main color yarn and ch 2.  HDC around. Join with a slip stitch.

Round 5 (COLOR B): The same way you switched color in row 5, switch back to color B. HDC around and join with a slip stitch.

Continue alternating colors as follows.
Round 6 (COLOR A)
Round 7 (COLOR B)
Round 8 (COLOR A)

At this point, you should have a total of 3 accent color bands and 4 main color bands – not including your chain row.

Cut your yarn, leaving about a 12″ tail, and finish off but don’t weave in the tail. Use your yarn needle to sew up the first round of chain stitches and color changes, then weave in those tails and cut. Since you continued the yarn though the color changes you should only have to sew in about 3 ends.

MODIFICATION – 2 COLOR BANDS:

For 2 bands, the rounds are as follows

Round 1-3 Color A
Round 4 – Color B
Round 5 – Color A
Round 6 – Color B
Round 7 & 8 – Color A

The Cinch:
1. Using your tail from the previous step and a yarn needle, gather the seamed section of the headband, and fold in half so that the fold is facing you.

2. In one hand, hold the folds and stitch your yarn needle through each section. Wrap the extra yarn around the center 2-3 times then secure with a knot on the inside.

3. With accent color, ch 27 and slip stitch into ch back to beginning.

4. Wrap the cord you just made around the crochet earwarmer twice and secure in the back/inside of the headband.

5. Weave in ends and wear with pride!

    Dear Chelsea,

Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. I whipped one up very early Christmas morning for my niece, who was delighted. (I took the liberty of adding a bow, so it doesn’t quite have the same elegant simplicity any more ;-). )

If you’d like to see pictures, I’ve added the project to my Ravelry account. I’m sure there’s a way to add your pattern to their database, but maybe you are the only person who can do that. (And maybe you don’t want to.)

I won’t included my Ravelry information here because I suspect my whole e-mail might be going out to the public. Please get in touch so that I can give you the link.

Can you suggest a Afghan pattern for sytherine to crochet? My granddaughter wants me to make one
I could just make it bigger or wider stripes or chunkier. Would gladly pay for a pattern in the green and silver
    Thanks

Hey Rena! I don’t have too much experience with afghans (no patience), but there are some really cool patterns on ravelry you can check out depending on your skill level and design you want

I’m confused making this based on the pattern. Your photo shows different patterns and they seem to have 9 rounds each. The pattern doesn’t seem to match the pictures.

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention Heather! I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to writing patterns and sometimes get ahead of myself – The pattern reflects the Gryffindor ear warmer specifically. I’ve updated the post to reflect what should be 7 rows or 8 including the chain row.

      For Gryffindor it should go
      Chain Row (1)- Gold
      Row 2 – Gold
      Row 3 – Red
      Row 4 – Gold
      Row 5 – Red
      Row 6 – Gold
      Row 7 – Red
      Row 8 – Red

The ravenclaw and slytherin also have 8 rounds albeit a little different. Its the same concept just worked in a different color order.
      So it goes (for slytherin)
Green (3 rows – including chain)
      Silver (1 row)
      Green (1 row)
      Silver (1 row)
      Green (2 rows) and finish.

      Hope this makes sense!

For the cinch, do you wrap the chain around two times, then connect the beginning of the chain with the end of the chain with a slip stitch?

    • Reply Chelsea

Yes! I’ve done some without the chain, just wrapping some yarn around, but I like the chain better.
