For the Love of Bob Ross

on March 31, 2019

Got a Bob Ross fan in your life? Figure out what to get them AND yourself with this Bob Ross Gift Guide! And remember, no mistakes, just happy accidents.

You guys want to know what gets me through finals? Bob Ross.

Okay, so hear me out. Gone are the days where I can turn up my favorite jams or a movie that I’ve seen a million times and still study. I think for some reason my brain is now more distracted and/or concerned with what I’m actually retaining than reading to just get it done. I usually work while listening to film scores, but come finals season, you can only hear Jurassic Park so many times.

MAKE IT: DIY Flamingo Stencil Tote Bag

So, Bob Ross. Its pretty much ASMR before that was a thing. AND its super encouraging!
“There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.”
“Let’s paint a happy little tree right here. “

Ya’ll I could go on. Will I ever attempt a Bob Ross tutorial? I don’t know. BUT I will give you a list of all the Bob Ross stuff I am currently crushing on… because that is the neighborly thing to do right?

SyFy’s The Magicians Cupcake Toppers

on January 21, 2019

Conjure up some free printable cupcake toppers for the season 4 premiere of Syfy’s The Magicians! And DO SOME G*D DAMN MAGIC!

Every year around the holidays, I embark on a Magicians rewatch. Mostly because I can binge the whole series on Netflix and catch up before the new season begins. I’m kinda obsessed at this point. I mean… seriously? Who doesn’t want to go to Magic Grad School and head off on crazy adventures and quests. I particularly like that we get to see the “science” of spell casting and things within the magic community. There are definitely more other things I like about the show, and if you haven’t watched it yet, I definitely recommend it. Margot and Elliot are goals.

These toppers are a great addition if you, like me, would like to party at the Physical Cottage at one point or another. My discipline is Illusions according to Brakebillsu.com (go take the tests and things!). Without giving away all the secrets, I’m a little in love and you should start watching and then DM me about it so we can geek out over it. Please and thank you.

Okay, so these toppers are pretty self explanatory. Print them out on some card stock, cut them out and glue or tape them onto some toothpicks. Alternately, you can use the print and cut function on your circuit explore.

I also added some gold coins as toppers to in a nod to Quentin Coldwater, who can be seen throughout nearly the entire first season with a coin flipping between his fingers.

Simple DIY Star Wars Sweater

on May 4, 2018

Make a simple DIY Star Wars Sweater for your office sweater, Disney bound or dapper day outfits! Show off your Rebel Alliance allegiance!

I know this is a little late for Star Wars and #Maythe4th but in my defense, school has been kicking my butt.

Make a simple DIY Star Wars Sweater for your office sweater, Disney bound or dapper day outfits! Show off your Rebel Alliance allegiance!

But you’re not here to listen to me talk about being burried in school work. No, you’re here to geek out and make all the things. Okay, so I was brought up with a healthy dose of scifi culture. My first R rated movie? The 5th Element. My first midnight showing? Star Wars Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith. And while I’m not the biggest fan of the first 3 movies – as a kid I thought they were cool, now – totally cringe-worthy. But anyhoo… I remember my dad taking us to see the original trilogy when they came to theaters again. He was so excited! And my sister and I had no idea what we were walking into.

Make It: Wookie Cookies

One of my favorite things about this series is not the themes or the characters, while they are very awesome, it is the fact that my dad and I can connect over it. We don’t agree on a lot of things, but we can definitely talk about some Star Wars. In fact, we both waited to see The Force Awakens until we were both in the same city – it took a lot of spoiler avoiding thats for sure.

So, if you’re like me and you LOVE Star Wars and maybe wanna let your geek flag fly without being super obvious, this project is for you! This is also a super fun project for a Rebel Alliance Disney Bound and a Star Wars Dapper Day costume!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Easter Eggs

Create fun Wizarding World of Harry Potter Easter Eggs this spring! Make Hogwarts House eggs or Weasleys Wizard Wheezes inspired Eggs!

I feel like I’ve been in a whirlwind of work and school and podcast launching for the last 2 months and I finally feel like I have some breathing room. One thing that has kept me partially sane is my mini trips to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood…. and wine. Lots of wine.

MAKE IT: Magical and Delicious Boozy Butterbeer Cupcakes (that might get you drunk)

Universal Studios is about half way between one of my jobs and with my season pass, I sometimes like to stop on the way home and wander through the cobble stone streets of Hogsmeade drinking a butterbeer and eating fish and chips. And… possibly work on Chemistry homework. IT NEVER ENDS!!!

So of course, when I finally had time to make some Easter Eggs, I only had one thing on my mind and for real… I’m a bit in love with these Harry Potter Easter Eggs. Aaaaand I’m kinda craving one of Mrs. Weasley’s chocolate eggs (even though she was super mean and gave Hermione a smaller egg in the 4th book).

Okay, so these Harry Potter easter eggs are two fold. I did the traditional Hogwarts House eggs with the house crests and the Hogwarts Crest and then I did some Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes inspired ones. The graphics and iconography for their shop is absolutely amazing and Fred and George were GENIUSES!!!

Crochet Vintage Hufflepuff Slippers (Free Pattern)

on December 1, 2017

Cozy up with these crochet vintage Hufflepuff slippers! Make them yourself with this free pattern and show your house pride!

I took the sorting test on Pottermore twice. Yep. I created two separate accounts for the sorting test. Why? Because I could? Maybe? Mostly because I got Gryffindor and I secretly think I’m a Hufflepuff. I got Ravenclaw on the second test so I’m not exactly sure what to do with that. Anyone else in the same boat?

As the holidays gear up, the pressure is on when you’re a crafter. I usually try to start my holiday creating at least 2 months in advance, but I was a little late with that so here I am… rushing to crochet, knit, weed, iron and paint a ridiculous amount of stuff. Does anyone else feel like they need to top themselves from the year before? I mean, yeah. I could go the easy route and just get gift sets for people but there comes this expectation that when you’re a crafter, you hand make everything. This year, I am making a ton of these slippers and I am in love with the color scheme. You see, this year, my friends and I decided to re-read the Harry Potter series and actually analyze it for what it is. It’s amazing the things that come into play when you’re looking at something as an adult. As a result, that friend group are getting vintage style slippers in their house colors! I nearly kept these Hufflepuff ones for myself!

I fell into the upside down. Okay that might be a bit of a stretch, but like most of American I am completely in love with Stranger Things. I try really hard not to go on Netflix binges – One because I really don’t have the time and two because I’m scared I’ll turn into a vampire because I won’t see light for 3 days. BUT it happened. I binged. More than once, I binged. And then I bought the games, and the merch, and I even designed my own logo. Pretty sweet huh?

http://makeitstranger.com

So here’s the thing. I feel like I’m not allowed to say that it makes me feel nostalgic because while I am definitely a baby of the 80’s (hands up 1987!) I am a child of the 90s. That’s not to say that I didn’t grow up watching The Goonies and Care bears, jut that it doesn’t actively remind me of my childhood. What Stranger Things does, however, is make me feel like I’m rediscovering something. Like when my dad kept us up late at night listening to his records – I’d grown up listening to that music but actually going through it with him was a completely new experience. Maybe it’s like a time capsule the previous generation buried? Maybe? Hit me up if there is an actual term for this. I feel like I’m really confused in general as to whether I’m actually a millenial or not.

Fusion Bead Stranger Things Banner

Get ready for Stranger Things Season 2 or just show off your knowledge of the Upside Down with this easy Perler Bead Stranger Things Banner. | Fusion beads | #Strangerthings | perler bead pattern | Christmas Lights | DoItYourFreakingSelf.com

True Story you guys. I have 2 days during the week to actually be productive. Otherwise, I’m either working, planning for work, or burnt out. So that is 2 days for blog content, cleaning my house, laundry, etc. You know what is NOT productive? Video games. You know what I did ALL last week? Played the new Stranger Things app. It ate all my time! And honestly, I regret NOTHING. Okay, maybe I regret a little bit but darn it, I love that show and I love those kids.

MAKE IT: Vicious Perler Bead Shark Cupcake Toppers

For real though you guys, I’m a little obsessed with that show. And the soundtrack – Yes I have it on vinyl and it sounds amazing. I’m sure there’s definitely a nostalgia factor but that show came out of nowhere and just took everyone by surprise!

To re-creates these cool Fusion Bead Christmas Lights and turn them into a Fusion Bead Stranger Things Banner is relatively simple. If you’ve got kiddos, this is a perfect project to get them involved in – but maybe don’t let them watch the show? Don’t blame me for nightmares that may or may not happen 🙂

Fusion Bead Stranger Things Banner

Supplies:
Fusion Beads: Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Black, White
Large square Perler bead board (or 2)
Wax or Parchment Paper
Iron
Black Embroidery Floss
Tapestry Needle
Awl – Optional
Black alphabet stickers

To create this banner, you’re going to need 8 of each color. I found that you can fit eight per board so the process goes relatively quickly – just do one color per board and you’ll end up with 32 lights total. Once your patterns are finished, cover the beads with parchment paper and iron each side on high for about 30 seconds keeping medium pressure and moving in gentle circular motions. Do this to each side – Don’t melt them down completely, you still want SOME holes in the beads to thread.

Once your beads have cooled its time to thread them! Thread a 6 foot strand of black embroidery floss through a tapestry needle. Begin to string your creations onto the floss. Going in through the back of your the top two black beads of each light, passing back through the front and repeating for each light. This will make sure that your banner doesn’t slide around and you can get the positioning right. Leave about 1 inch length between each. – If you don’t have a clear hole to thread through, use the awl to punch a larger hole in the top two black beads.

Once you’re finished, secure your creation to the wall however you like – I used some tacks and masking tape – and affix your letter stickers beneath.

That’s it! You’re done! Treat yo’ self to a cocktail or delicious Eleven inspired Eggo cupcake! Just don’t get stuck in the upside down. The demagorgon might get you.

Host a Tim Burton Inspired Halloween Party

Host a Tim Burton Inspired Halloween Party! Loving the little details and pops of blue and purple that bring it together!

Shout out to all of the parents who randomly indulge their children’s party whims! Okay so when I was in third grade (I think) we had just moved to a new city and I really wanted to throw a Halloween party. Why? I honestly have no clue but my parents were amazing and actually went through with it. I don’t remember many details beyond eating a donut off of a tree and Shane from my class’s vampire blood capsules but I’m sure it was epic. Now that I’m older I realize the work that went into that party even if it wasn’t “pinterest perfect” as the standard is set to be these days. This year, instead of a crazy party, I wanted to throw a party that was outside of the normal black and orange and spooky. I was really inspired by Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas…. among others. And with some help from Oriental Trading, I was able to add some fun details like the striped table runner and skelleton glasses that really brought the decor to a whole new level.

This post is sponsored in part by Oriental Trading, all opinions are my own.

DIY Harry Potter Makeup Brushes

on September 12, 2017

Create your own magical Harry Potter Makeup Brushes for under $10! You may not be able to levitate your eye shadows, but these brushes will take your makeup game to a whole new spellbinding level.

Let me start this off by saying that I have been binge listening to The Quibbler Podcast and it is amazing and you should go listen to it ASAP. Okay… on to the story…

Create your own magical DIY Harry Potter Makeup Brushes for under $10! These brushes will take your makeup game to a whole new spellbinding level.

Hands up if you have no clue about the difference between a blender brush and an angle brush! Do they put color on my eyelid? That’s all I need. I have a confession to make though, I own so many eyeshadow pallettes it’s sad and there’s only so many youtube beauty vloggers/tutorials I can deal with on a weekly basis. And to be honest, I really only enjoy watching Kimberly Clark. So a lot of my eyeshadow gets used once while I’m experimenting because well… putting on makeup is not really something fun for me.

I’m trying though! I’m really trying! I know that you don’t really NEED makeup to look beautiful and all that, but for me it at least makes my mornings look like I tried to be a functional adult. These Magic Wand Harry Potter Makeup Brushes though? They kinda make me want to actually do my makeup because it just gives me a chance to use them. That and I can turn on the Harry Potter soundtrack and pretend to cast a floating charm on Grampa the Cat (It has never worked because I never got my Hogwarts letter and I am still bitter about that)
